Massive flooding in southern Russia

Description

It was already a wet Spring in the southern Russian republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia when a violent storm dumped a record breaking amount of rain on the region for three straight days in June of 2003. The enormous influx of rain water was threatening to destroy the region's reservoir and dam. To save it, the powers that be took a calculated risk and opened up the sluices. Water started rushing out at an incredible rate. The floodwaters covered over 60 miles in under four hours. On the morning of June 21 the water entered - and overwhelmed - the city of Nevinnomyssk.
